Book Review: Making of a General A Himalayan Echo
By Maj Gen AK Chaturvedi, AVSM, VSM (Retired)
I recently came across this book written by Lt Gen KonsamHimalay Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM and pub by Konark Publishers Pvt Ltd, New Delhi
It is a book which is a reflection on New India, where everyone has a right to grow as per his capability. It fills my heart with a sense of pride that in India merit counts. It debunks the narrative given by many in India that the society is divided in ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’, because it shows that a boy from one of the remotest part of the country can rise to one of the highest position. It is also a manifestation of the victory of the soldierly values which can help a person to excel against all odds, as such it is lesson in character building.
Gen KH Singh’s memoirs will inspire many a young minds to progress in life because if a boy from a village in remotest part of the country can overcome linguistic challenges, physical challenges, racial prejudices and yet grow then every child in this country has a possibility to grow provided he/ she shows the kind of grit, determination and will that the General has displayed at various stages of his life and career.
I have had the privilege to know the general at different stages of his career and I saw his growth, which shows his intellectual prowess and mental mobility. I wish we have many more soldier scholars of his caliber in Indian Army.
All in all, a ‘must read’ book by all .!
