Our misconstrued priorities Chanakya Forum 07 Nov 2021
हाल ही मे घटित हुई दो घटनाओं को अलग-अलग तरह की मीडिया कवरेज मिली। दोनों घटनाओं में शामिल व्यक्ति एक ही उम्र, यानि दोनों 23 वर्ष के थेl पहली घटना में, अभिनेता शाहरुख खान के बेटे आर्यन खान को नशीली दवाओं से संबंधित आरोप में गिरफ्तार किया गया था और जमानत मिलने से पहले चार सप्ताह तक हिरासत में रखा गया। उनके कारावास के पूरे समय के दौरान मीडिया ने प्रत्येक गतिविधि का अनुसरण किया, समाचार चैनलों ने उनकी भागीदारी पर बहस करते हुए घंटों समर्पित किये और कई मौकों पर तो उन्होंने जो कुछ खाया और जो लोग उनसे मिलने आए, उन्हें भी कवर किया। आर्यन को समर्थन देने के लिए फिल्मी सितारों और राजनेताओं ने शाहरुख खान के आवास पर लाइन लगा दी।
लगभग उसी समय, 23 वर्षीय लेफ्टिनेंट ऋषि कुमार, एक सैनिक मंजीत सिंह के साथ एलओसी के पास एक बारूदी सुरंग विस्फोट में अपनी जान गंवा बैठे। ऋषि अपने माता-पिता का इकलौता पुत्र था, जबकि मंजीत सिंह को सेवा में आये मुश्किल से पांच वर्ष ही हुए थेl इन दोनों की उम्र लगभग समान थी। आर्यन खान के पहले पन्ने की सुर्खियों की तुलना में इस घटना के समाचार को अखबारों के कोनों में कवर किया गया था। यह भारतीय मीडिया की विडंबना है।
मीडिया और कई फिल्मी हस्तियों ने आर्यन को 23 साल की उम्र में बच्चा ही करार दिया, बावजूद इसके कि इस उम्र में उनसे समझदारी से वोट करने की उम्मीद की जाती है और वह अपना जीवन साथी चुन सकते हैं। मुझे आश्चर्य है कि क्या इन लोगों को पता नही है कि इस उम्र में सेना के अधिकारी युद्ध और उग्रवाद विरोधी अभियानों का नेतृत्व करते है, अपनी और उन लोगों की जान गवां देते हैं जिनका वे नेतृत्व कर रहे होते हैं। असाधारण साहस, धैर्य का परिचय देने वाले और अपने जीवन बलिदान करते हुए ऑपरेशन में सफलता हासिल करने वालों में से ज्यादातर 23 वर्ष के ही थे।
देश की रक्षा करते हुए कारगिल में सर्वोच्च बलिदान देने वाले हमारे दो राष्ट्रीय प्रतीक विक्रम बत्रा और मनोज कुमार पांडे की आयु भी लगभग 23 वर्ष ही थी। सेवारत रहते हुए परमवीर चक्र प्राप्त करने वाले योगेंद्र यादव और संजय कुमार भी केवल 9 और 23 वर्ष के थेl उससे भी कम उम्र में सैनिक कारगिल में तैनात थे और गर्व के साथ देश की सेवा कर रहे हैं।
शाहरुख के घर के बाहर हजारों की संख्या में फैन्स जमा हो गए और उन्होंने पटाखे फोड़कर आर्यन की वापसी का जश्न मनाया। जहां एक परिवार त्योहारों का आनंद उठा रहा है क्योंकि, उनके 23 वर्षीय बेटे को ड्रग के आरोप से जमानत पर रिहा किया जा रहा है, वहीं दूसरे परिवार जिसने अपने जीवन की रोशनी खो दी है उसे मीडिया ने नजरअंदाज किया और वे मौन में शोक मनाएंगे। मीडिया ने एक अंतिम यात्रा को नजरअंदाज करते हुए उत्सव को उल्लास के साथ कवर किया।
देश के लिए अपने प्राणों की आहुति देने वालों के मामले में, छोटे शहरों के निवासी, जिनमें से यह बहादुर सैनिक भी हैं, वे दुख की घड़ी में परिवार के साथ खड़े रहते हैं और उनके प्रति अपना सम्मान प्रदर्शित करते हैंl जबकि मीडिया मशहूर हस्तियों पर ध्यान केंद्रित करता है। ये वो आम भारतीय हैं, जिन्होंने मीडिया को उसकी इच्छा पर छोड़ते हुए वे जो करना चाहते हैं, उन्हें करने दिया और बहादुर सैनिक के प्रति अपना सम्मान प्रदर्शित किया। मीडिया सत्ताधारी, कुलीन और शक्तिशाली घरानों को अधिक महत्व देता हैl उसे अपनी जान जोखिम में डालकर कर्तव्य निभाने वाले साधारण सैनिक से ज्यादा अमीर और प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तियों से सरोकार है।
वे यह संदेश दे रहे हैं कि कानून तोड़ना आपको सामाजिक पहचान और मीडिया स्पेस दिला सकता है, जबकि देश के लिए अपने जीवन का बलिदान देने का कोई मतलब नहीं है, खासकर अगर सैनिक एक छोटे शहर के एक साधारण परिवार से आता है। क्या मीडिया यही चाहता है कि हमारे युवा इसी बात पर विश्वास करें।
आर्यन खान को जब तक जमानत नहीं मिल गयी उसकी जमानत की सुनवाई दिन-ब-दिन होती रहीl जबकि हजारों विचाराधीन कैदी ऐसे हैं, जो मामूली आरोपों के लिए कैद में है, उनकी जमानत की सुनवाई केवल इसलिए नहीं हो पाती, क्योंकि वे अदालत में अपने बचाव के लिए हाई प्रोफाइल वकीलों का खर्च नहीं उठा सकते। वे बिना किसी ठोस कारण के वर्षों लॉकअप में बिताते हैं और फिर भी हम यह दावा करते हैं कि न्याय सबके लिए समान है। अगर ऐसी असमानताएं हमारी न्यायिक व्यवस्था पर मजाक नहीं है, तो मुझे आश्चर्य है कि और क्या होगा।
आर्यन ने एक मनोरंजन कार्यक्रम में भाग लिया, यह जानते हुए भी कि वह जो कर रहा था वह कानून के खिलाफ है, जबकि ऋषि अपने काम पर चले गए, यह जानते हुए कि उनकी जान जाने सहित कुछ भी संभव हो सकता है। आर्यन खान को दूसरा मौका मिलेगा, क्योंकि अदालत उन्हें मुक्त कर सकती है। देश की सेवा करने वाले और अपने प्राणों की आहुति देने वाले ऋषि को दूसरा मौका कभी नहीं मिलेगा।
जो लोग वर्दी पहनते हैं, वे राष्ट्र के प्रति अपनी जिम्मेदारी के बारे में दो बार नहीं सोचते और अपने जीवन को दांव पर लगा देते हैं, क्योंकि यह उनकी अपने कर्तव्य के प्रति प्रतिबद्धता है, जबकि मशहूर हस्तियां यह जानकर नियम तोड़ती हैं कि वे बच सकते हैं। फिर भी, सैनिकों के बलिदानों को भुला दिया जाता है, जबकि मशहूर हस्तियों की पूजा की जाती है। प्राणों की आहुति देने वाले सैनिक अपने परिवारों और जिस यूनिट में उन्होंने सेवा की, उनके दिलों में रहते है, जबकि कानून तोड़ने वालों को मीडिया हीरो बना देता है।
मीडिया को इस बात पर विचार करना होगा कि हमारे युवाओं का रोल मॉडल कौन होना चाहिए, अपना जीवन बलिदान करने वाले या कानून तोड़ने वाले। उनकी धारणा के अनुसार ये रोल मॉडल निश्चित रूप से कानून तोड़ने वाले आर्यन खान जैसे ही हैं, सैनिक नहीं। इसमें कोई आश्चर्य नहीं है कि कहावत, ‘भगवान और सैनिकों को केवल मुसीबत के समय ही याद किया जाता है,’ का उपरोक्त एक प्रभावशाली चित्रण है।
यह याद रखना होगा कि कोई भी देश केवल तभी विकास कर सकता है और जनता की माँगो को पूरा कर सकता है, जब उसकी राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित हो। एक असुरक्षित राष्ट्र कभी भी विकास के लिए आवश्यक निवेश और प्रौद्योगिकी को आकर्षित नहीं करेगा। हमारे पड़ोस में पाकिस्तान इसका प्रमुख उदाहरण है। जो लोग इस सेवा के लिए अपने प्राणों की आहुति देते हैं, वे स्वयंसेवी होते हैं और कानून तोड़ने वालों के समान नागरिक होते हैं। हालाँकि, मीडिया उन्हें दूसरे दर्जे के नागरिकों के रूप में वर्गीकृत करता है। क्या यह मीडिया की पाठकों और दर्शकों की संख्या को बढ़ाने की माँग के कारण है अथवा एक अमीर और प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तित्व की संतान होने के कारण यह छोटे शहर के युवा सैनिक की तुलना में मीडिया मे अधिक बिक्री योग्य है।
देश के लिए अपने प्राणों की आहुति देने वालों को मीडिया अखबारों के कोने में खो देता है, जबकि प्रसिद्ध घरों के लोग, यहां तक कि असामाजिक गतिविधियों के आरोपी, पहले पन्ने पर हैं। क्या यह वह सम्मान है, जो हम उन लोगों को देते हैं जो हमारी राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करते हैं, ताकि देश का विकास हो सके।
हम एक ऐसे राष्ट्र के रूप में दिखाई देते हैं, जो हमारी सीमाओं की रक्षा करने वालों की तुलना में असामाजिक गतिविधियों में शामिल लोगों का महिमामंडन करते हुए, उनकी सेवा करते हैं। यदि हम राष्ट्रीय चरित्र का निर्माण करना चाहते हैं और राष्ट्रवाद की भावना को बढ़ाने की आशा रखते हैं, तो मीडिया को आत्म विश्लेषण करने और अपनी प्राथमिकताओं में सुधार करने की आवश्यकता है।
Two recent incidents received different levels of media coverage. In both the incidents, those involved were of the same age, 23. In the first incident, Aryan Khan, the son of actor Shah Rukh Khan, was arrested for a drug related charge and spent four weeks in detention, before being granted bail. Throughout his incarceration the media followed every lead, news channels devoted hours debating his involvement and on occasions even covered what he ate and those who visited him. Film stars and politicians made a beeline to Shah Rukh Khan’s residence to offer support for Aryan.
Around the same time, Lt Rishi Kumar, also 23, lost his life in a mine blast along the LOC, along with another soldier, Sepoy Manjit Singh. Rishi was the only son of his parents, while Manjit Singh had barely five years’ service and was about the same age. The news of the incident was covered in remote corners of newspapers missed by half the readers as compared to front page headlines of Aryan Khan. The irony of the Indian media.
Many media and film personalities termed Aryan as a child at the age of 23, despite the fact that at this age he is expected to vote sensibly and can chose his life partner. I wonder if they also know that at this age army officers have led men into battle and counter insurgency operations, placing lives of themselves and those they lead on the limb. Most of those who have displayed extraordinary courage, fortitude and achieved success in operations while sacrificing their lives were 23-year-olds.
Vikram Batra and Manoj Kumar Pandey, two national icons, who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the nation were around 23 years old as were most who made the supreme sacrifice in Kargil. Yogendra Yadav and Sanjay Kumar, the two serving recipients of the PVC were also 23 or even younger in Kargil and continue to serve the nation with pride.
Thousands of fans gathered outside Shah Rukh’s residence and celebrated Aryan’s return by bursting crackers. While one family would enjoy the festival season, with their 23-year-old son released on bail from a drug charge, the other family has lost the light of their lives and would mourn in silence, ignored by the media. The media covered one celebration with glee, ignoring the last journey of a the other.
In the case of those who lay down their lives for the nation, it is residents of the small cities, to which the valiant soldier belongs, who stand by the family in its moment of grief and display their respect, while the media concentrates on celebrities. These common Indians are the ones who are doing what the media should have done, displayed respect for the valiant. The ruling elite and powerful media houses are more concerned with the rich and famous than the simple soldier who does his duty, despite risk to his life.
The message they convey is breaking laws can bring you social recognition and media space, while sacrificing your life for the nation has little meaning, especially if the soldier comes from a simple family of a small town. Is this what the media want our youth to believe.
While Aryan Khan’s bail hearings were heard day after day till bail was granted, there are thousands and thousands of undertrials, held even for minor charges, whose bail hearings never come up, solely because they cannot afford high profile lawyers to defend them in court. They spend years in lockups for no reason. And yet we claim that justice is equal for all. If such disparity is not a mockery of our judicial system, I wonder what else would be.
Aryan attended the social event aware that what he was doing was against the law, while Rishi went on his task, aware that anything, including losing his life was a possibility. Aryan Khan would get a second opportunity as the court could set him free, if and when the case comes before it. Rishi, who served the nation and gave up his life, never had a second chance.
Those who wear the uniform do not think twice about their responsibility to the nation and place their lives on the line as it is their bonded duty, while celebrities break rules knowing they can get away. Yet, soldiers’ sacrifices are forgotten, while celebrities are idolized. Soldiers who sacrifice their lives remain in the hearts of their families and the unit they served in while those who break laws are treated as media heroes.
The media should consider as to who should be role models for our youth, those who sacrifice their lives or those who break laws. If we go by their perception, then it is those who are lawbreakers, not soldiers. No wonder, the adage, ‘God and soldiers are only remembered in times of trouble,’ has a powerful meaning.
It must be remembered that a nation only develops and provides amenities that the public demands once its national security is assured. An insecure nation would never draw investment and technology essential for growth. Pakistan, in our neighbourhood, is a prime example. Those who sacrifice lives to provide this service are volunteers and come from the same stock as those who break laws. However, the media classifies them as second-rate citizens. Is this because of the media’s desperation for readership and viewership or is it that being the child of a rich and famous personality has more media saleability than being a young soldier from a small town.
The media relegates those who sacrifice their lives for the nation to lost corners of newspapers while those from famous households, even accused on anti-social activities, are on front pages. Is this the respect we offer to those who ensure our national security, thereby enabling the nation to grow.
We appear to be a nation which displays lip service to those who guard our frontiers, while glorifying those who are involved in anti-social activities. If we hope to build national character and enhance nationalism, the media needs to retrospect and set its priorities right.
